"Some of your failures will lead to greater successes, and that some of what you thought of as successes may lead to failures."[1]
Success without fulfillment
"Even if you have a great position and have acquired wealth and stature in society, the empty nature of your life will be pervasive unless you have found your greater work and are doing it to the best of your ability. Those who do this experience a satisfaction and a sense of value and power that is lost to everyone else, no matter what they proclaim for themselves." [2]
"Even if you are successful in your pursuits and are able—through sheer determination or manipulation and deception of others—you are able to achieve your personal goals, you have made no progress at all if you are not moving in the direction that your life is meant to go. In fact, you have taken yourself farther afield, and you will feel restless and incomplete as a result.
Even if you achieve wealth and are surrounded by luxuries, you will be restless and discontented because the deeper need of your soul has gone unmet, and you have taken yourself so far afield, so far off course, that you do not know where you are now."[3]
A greater success
“What is success? Success is the ability to experience and express the greater purpose that has brought you into the world, a greater purpose that will require strong relationships, a greater purpose that will require that you are stable and that you can adapt to changing circumstances in the world, a greater purpose that will require that you have a deep connection to the greater Knowledge that God has placed within you, to guide you and to protect you and to lead you to your greater life."[4]
“We teach a very practical approach to life and often, even though this is a spiritual training, it is necessary for us to despiritualize people. Your pursuit of God must be built on a successful life in the world. By successful I do not mean that you are rich and famous. It is simply that your life in the world is sufficient, and you build upon this. The Plan of the Teachers calls for the development of students who have a foundation, for they are in a position to give. Their lives are not about attempting to fulfil all of their great needs because there is no fulfillment there. Their needs are met sufficiently, so they are in a position to contribute something greater. As a result, they are in a position to receive something greater.”[5]
“That really is success, in a greater sense, in a greater way. It is not just success in terms of what your culture values or in what your family thinks is significant. It is success in terms of your real nature and the Creator of all life, who has sent you into the world to give special gifts to a world in need." [4]
"To be observant and alert is a profound state. It is very rare. It is so easy for the alert person to be successful in life because there are so few alert people. Alert means you are not preoccupied with yourself. You are observing things around you objectively without attempting to define things or judge things." [6]
